UFC confirms Walker vs. Cortes-Acosta headliner as Bonfim questions Brady's late exit

Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Johnny Walker now headline Nov. 7 in Las Vegas. Sean Brady says a staph infection put him in hospital, and Gabriel Bonfim, now off the card, has questioned the timing.

The UFC announced on Friday, Oct. 30 that Sean Brady vs. Gabriel Bonfim is off its Nov. 7 Las Vegas card. Waldo Cortes-Acosta vs. Johnny Walker is the new main event of UFC Vegas 124. The UFC cited an injury to Brady, and Bonfim is off the card too. Heavy says the UFC couldn't find him an opponent in time.

Brazilian journalist Laerte Viana broke both changes on X on Thursday, Oct. 29, and MMA Fighting confirmed them, according to Sherdog and SB Nation. "See you on the 7th! I started the camp today," Walker wrote on Instagram.

Two accounts of the timing

Bonfim reacted on Instagram hours after the news, speaking in Portuguese. "A week before the fight, he tells us he got injured," he said, in the English published by MMA Junkie. "You can't really understand it, right?" He didn't say the injury wasn't real, though he did say, "He says he got injured."

Brady gave his side in a YouTube video, according to SB Nation. He said a Tuesday morning practice went fine, but his knee swelled after a bike session that night. "By nine at night, I couldn't walk," he said. He went to hospital the next morning and stayed three days, and tests found staph.

The UFC has said only "injury", so the diagnosis rests on his account.

He dates part of it himself: "This is Monday, October 26. My knee is still blown up." That puts the practice at Oct. 20 by our reading, though he didn't name that date.

The news came out nine days before the fight. Bonfim says only "a week before the fight", and nobody has said when the UFC was told. We think that's the missing fact, and without it the two accounts don't necessarily clash.

Brady hasn't answered the post directly on any page we read. Remarks reported by SB Nation, which may predate it, were sympathetic. "And I feel for Bonfim too," he said, adding, "I know he was putting in the training camp."

By our count, infections have now cost him three booked fights, including his foot in 2021 and his elbow in 2023.

The new main event

Cortes-Acosta (17-4) gets his first UFC main event on two straight decision losses. Alexander Volkov beat him on May 9 and Curtis Blaydes on Sept. 12, after he'd scored three straight knockouts. He's No. 6 on the UFC's main heavyweight list.

Walker (23-10, 1 NC) isn't on that list. The UFC's release calls him No. 12, his place on its separate All Meta list. He stopped Mick Parkin with knees at 3:35 of the first round at UFC 332 on Oct. 3. That was his UFC heavyweight debut, and he's back after 35 days.

Cortes-Acosta is −196 and Walker +160 on our fight page, or 63% and 37%, though prices can still move. Heavy cited opening odds of −300 and +247 from a FightOdds.io post naming no book, and says early action favoured Walker. At closing prices he's up 2.40 units over 11 priced UFC fights, though he's 2-4 as an underdog.

Heavy and our event page both have it at five rounds, but the UFC's release doesn't say.

We don't think this puts either man near a title shot. Cortes-Acosta just lost to two fighters ranked above him, and Walker has one UFC win at heavyweight. Champion Ciryl Gane defends against Josh Hokit at UFC 334 a week later.

What's next

Brady (19-2) has no booking. He says the infection "will clear up in a couple of weeks", but the Nov. 21, Dec. 5 and Dec. 12 cards are full. He's aiming for the Jan. 16 Fight Night in Dallas, though the UFC hasn't put him on it.

Bonfim (20-1) has won five straight, latest a decision over Belal Muhammad on June 6. We think he loses the most here, because he's No. 5 on the main welterweight list and has no date. "But I believe there will be news coming soon," he said.

Brady wants that Dallas card "whether I get a new opponent, whether they find Bonfim someone, or if they just push it." The UFC hasn't said whether the fight will be rebooked.
