Quillan Salkilld vs. Benoit Saint Denis to headline UFC Fight Night Sydney in February

The UFC has booked Australian lightweight Quillan Salkilld, 6-0 in the UFC, against France's Benoit Saint Denis for Feb. 7 at Afterpay Arena. It's the first UFC Fight Night in Sydney since 2017.

Quillan Salkilld will fight Benoit Saint Denis in the main event of UFC Fight Night Sydney on Feb. 7, 2027, the UFC announced on Tuesday. The lightweight bout tops a Sunday card at Afterpay Arena. In the US, it airs Saturday, Feb. 6, on Paramount+, per the UFC's announcement post.

The UFC calls it the first Fight Night in Sydney since 2017, when Fabricio Werdum beat Marcin Tybura at the same arena. The city has hosted numbered events since, including UFC 312 and UFC 325. The release doesn't give the number of rounds, but SB Nation reports it as a five-rounder.

The four Road to UFC Season 5 finals are on the prelims, each for a UFC contract. The UFC says more bouts "will be announced shortly."

How they got here

Salkilld, 26, was raised in Broome, Western Australia, and is 13-1 with 13 straight wins, according to Wikipedia. His only loss came in his pro debut in February 2021. Since earning his contract on Dana White's Contender Series in September 2024, he has gone 6-0 in the UFC, with five Performance of the Night bonuses.

His last four wins all came in the first round. He knocked out Nasrat Haqparast with a head kick, submitted Jamie Mullarkey in Sydney and stopped Beneil Dariush in Perth in May. Then, in his first main event, he choked out Mateusz Gamrot at 4:25 of the first round in Las Vegas on Aug. 8.

That night he named Saint Denis as his next target. "(Benoit Saint-Denis) is the one I've had my eyes on for a bit," he said on the UFC's post-fight show, according to Heavy. We found no public reply from Saint Denis.

Saint Denis, 30, is a former French Army soldier from Nîmes. He is 17-4 with one no contest, and all 17 wins came by knockout or submission, per Wikipedia. After back-to-back losses to Dustin Poirier and Renato Moicano in 2024, he finished four straight opponents, including Dariush in 16 seconds. The last of those was a second-round TKO of Dan Hooker on the UFC 325 card where Salkilld beat Mullarkey.

That run ended on July 11 at UFC 329, when Paddy Pimblett submitted him in 52 seconds. In the official UFC rankings, Saint Denis sits at No. 6 and Salkilld at No. 7. Pimblett is No. 5, and Justin Gaethje holds the title.

What the odds have said

Salkilld has closed as the favourite in all six of his UFC fights and won all six, according to our records. His closing lines ranged from −1000 against Mullarkey to −127 against Haqparast, and together they expected about 4.3 wins. One unit on him at every closing line would have returned 2.26 units of profit, about 38% per bet.

That is past performance, not a price anyone can take now. His two tightest lines, −127 against Haqparast and −152 against Gamrot, still ended in first-round finishes. We have closing odds for only Saint Denis's last two fights, and he was a slight favourite at −122 in the Pimblett loss. There are no odds for the Sydney fight on our site yet.

What it means

Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski backed Salkilld in comments to UFC Australia and New Zealand, MMA Junkie reported on Wednesday. He said a win should put Salkilld in with "your Ilia's, Paddy's" and then a title shot.

"I like BSD, (but) Quillan smokes him."

Salkilld expects the same. He told Fox Sports Australia he would prepare for five rounds but doesn't think the fight will get out of the first, according to ActuMMA. We found no public comment on the booking from Saint Denis.

We think Salkilld gets the test he asked for: the ranked fighter directly above him, one who has already won in that arena. Saint Denis, coming off a 52-second loss, gets a main event against the man who called him out.

We'd read little into their common opponent. Both stopped Dariush in the first round, but those were single fights six months apart, and Dariush came in 1.2 lb heavy for Saint Denis.

Ticket presale registration is open at ufc.com/sydney, and the UFC plans free open workouts, a press conference and ceremonial weigh-ins during fight week.
