The Two-Inch Reach Advantage Is a Myth

Every pre-fight breakdown cites reach. Across 6,600 UFC bouts, a small reach edge is worth almost nothing — here’s when it actually starts to matter.

Watch any pre-fight breakdown and someone will point out the reach advantage. “He’s got a three-inch edge in reach.” It gets treated as a real, decisive factor. But does a couple of inches of reach actually swing fights? I checked about 6,600 UFC bouts where both fighters’ reach is on record.

The nice thing about testing reach is that the two fighters in a bout share a weight class, so the reach gap between them is a clean measure of limb length at equal size — no need to untangle it from weight. I looked at who won as a function of that gap, using the same within-fight approach as the aging study (which sidesteps a lot of confounds).

A small reach edge is worth almost nothing

Overall, the longer-reach fighter wins 52% of the time — a real edge, but a small one. The surprise is in the shape. Break it down by the size of the reach advantage:

A one-inch edge is a coin flip. Two to three inches — the number every broadcast fixates on — is 51%, basically nothing. The advantage only becomes meaningful at four inches and up, and it doesn’t really bite until the gap is six inches or more, where the longer fighter wins about 59%. So the “he has a two-inch reach advantage” talking point is, for practical purposes, noise.

Reach is mostly just “being tall”

Reach and height are so tightly linked that they carry the same information. The longer-reach fighter wins 52.0%; the taller fighter wins 52.2% — essentially identical. And having unusually long reach for your height (a high “ape index”) adds only a sliver: those fighters win about 51% versus 49% for the short-armed. Most of what looks like a reach edge is really just being the bigger athlete, not having freakishly long arms.

It matters most up top, least down low

Reach pays off far more in the heavier divisions. The longer-reach fighter wins 50% in the lightweight classes and below (i.e., nothing), 53% in the welterweight and middleweight range, and 57% at light heavyweight and heavyweight. In the smaller weight classes — faster, higher-volume, more scrambly — reach is close to irrelevant. Up top, where one clean shot ends the night, length matters.

The surprise: reach helps grapplers more than strikers

You’d assume reach is a striker’s weapon — keep the fight at the end of a jab. The data says the opposite. When the longer-reach fighter is a grappler, he wins 55%. When he’s a striker, he wins just 49% — below a coin flip. The likely explanation: a rangy striker who can’t wrestle gets his distance closed and neutralized, while a long grappler uses the extra levers at both ranges. (One caveat: “striker” versus “grappler” here is a rough proxy based on career takedown volume, so treat this one as suggestive rather than settled.)

How reach actually helps

When length does matter, the mechanism is what you’d expect. The fighters with a big reach edge land more (about 4.2 significant strikes per minute versus 3.7 for the much shorter side), absorb less (3.6 versus 4.2), and score more knockdowns. And when they win, they finish more often by knockout — 34% of their wins come by KO, versus 31% for shorter fighters, who lean more on grinding out decisions. It’s the classic idea of hitting without being hit, and it shows up cleanly in the numbers.

The takeaway

Reach is real, but it’s badly overrated in the way fans and broadcasts use it. A one- or two-inch edge tells you almost nothing. What actually matters is a large gap (four inches and up), a heavier division, and — surprisingly — a fighter who can grapple as well as strike. Next time someone cites a two-inch reach advantage as a reason to pick a fighter, you can safely file it under noise.
